First Pow Wow!!

We went to our very first pow wow this weekend, the Seattle Seafair Pow Wow. It's an annual event out at Discovery Park. We made a night of it, eating a plate of the Salmon Bake and watching the dancers. We were hoping to get our hot little hands on some fry bread too, but the line was about 100 people long all night! Oh well, maybe next year!

All the participants were fully dressed in their traditional attire. It was so cool to see. Koen kept referring to all the men with the feathered headdresses as 'javascript:void(0)kings'. There was one man in particular that Koen kept an eye on. His face was painted completely white with big black dots around the perimeter and his lips were painted black. He was very animated as he danced, and even came through the crowd a couple of times. I think Koen was afraid of him, but he didn't say so.

He really enjoyed the drums and songs. For his birthday, Grammie Pat and Grandpa Dan gave him a small raw hide hand drum that he is in love with. Whenever I bust it out for a little dance or two, he grins from ear to ear!

We captured some footage of our own little dancers at the event.

As we were getting ready to head home, Clay said that he felt like Finn was getting overwhelmed with all the loud drums and was ready for some quiet time. No more than two minutes after we walked away from the main area, this is how he looked. I guess Clay was right.

Until next year!
